Here's some of what Bill Clark from the Columbia Daily Tribune had to say...
Hang on to your hat — and get your seats early.
Many of Columbia’s supercharged musicians will be on stage in a grand celebration of the theater’s history with a night of music from Beethoven to bluegrass, Gershwin to Roy Acuff, Chopin to Patsy Cline.
The lineup...
Jake Clayton is coming from Nashville on one of his rare free evenings from tour obligations with such stars as Tanya Tucker and Jimmy Wayne. He’ll play his magic fiddle and at least a dozen other instruments. Enough said!
Sutu Forte will probably change hair colors with each set and prove once again that Beethoven, Gershwin and Chopin are not dead, just resting and waiting for her to play.
Rob Doyen, the veteran song and dance guy from Stephens College — the best-kept secret in our town — will have you on your feet with his collection of Broadway’s best. Those who see Rob at Stephens know; the rest of you are in for a pleasant surprise.
These are a few of the headliners — and Ol’ Bill Clark has a promise that Jake and Sutu will close it out with a “breakdown” — a roof-raising duel between the fiddle and piano that will have you on your feet and breathless. It might be “Foggy Mountain” or “In the Mood,” or who knows what else this pair might do — but it will raise the roof — guaranteed!
The supporting cast includes:
● Willie Cogshell, the star of “Civil War” and “Showboat” at Columbia Entertainment Company, fulfills a dream of singing “Ol’ Man River” on the Missouri Theatre stage.
● Hazel Kinder, the proprietor of the Lighthouse Theater, will join in the fun with a tribute to Patsy Cline and/or Dolly Parton.
● Can it be? Coming out of retirement one more time, though probably not the last, is the one and only Irene Haskins. With a little luck, maybe she and Rob Doyen can do a remake of a Nelson Eddy-Jeannette MacDonald duet. Imagine Irene as Jeannette MacDonald! They’re from the same era.
● Don’t forget Lucretia Warmwater. Lucretia will bring a different dimension to the program. No one yet has defined that dimension. Please come and help us do so.
Oh, yeah, one other thing. We’re operating this like the good old days of vaudeville. Ol’ Clark will be backstage with a big hook. If the act is lousy, he’ll give ’em the hook. So, rehearse aplenty, Irene!
